Imagine how it would feel if you were on stage, and you not only forgot your lines, but never even knew them - or the play being performed - in the first place! This is exactly what happens to George Spelvin, an accountant and lapsed Catholic. George suddenly finds himself having to stand in for an actor injured in a car accident, but he doesn't know which play is being performed, and worse yet, it seems to change all the time. One moment it's a comedy of manners by Coward, the next it's Shakespearean tragedy followed by surrealism ā la Beckett. Will poor George survive his nightmare? Is this just theatre or is it for real? Will the maid arrive in time?
