“Absent Friends “

by Alan Ayckbourn

directed by Bruce Marsland

Alan Ayckbourn is one of Britain's most popular and prolific contemporary playwrights.  His works, often labelled simply as comedies, tread the razor's edge that divides humour and tragedy.  Ordinary people face life's difficulties across the battlefield of everyday domestic situations.  In "Absent Friends", teatime brings together a man whose fiancée has recently drowned, a failing businessman whose wife has just slept with his best customer, and two women facing mid-life crises in very different ways. Written in the 1970s, the topics remain modern, the humour remains cutting, and the language remains as fresh and sharp as ever.
