Ritva has just reached her seventieth birthday. Throughout her entire life, she has been an advocate for Lenin's socialist dream. In the wake of the European Union, the realities of her dream are disappearing, and now her only child, Paula, wants to leave home and country. However, before her daughter departs, Ritva is determined that she and her daughter will celebrate one more birthday together. Pencils in Heaven takes place in a restaurant situated on Vuorimiehenkatu in Helsinki, where Ritva has decided that the idea of "togetherness" will influence her daughter's heart, as Finland influenced Lenin's heart to formulate his manifesto, drafted in 1906 on this very street.
